John Cawley
Cawley has developed and taught numerous courses in the PA program and the MPH program. For many years, he taught and/or co-taught the course “Biologic Concepts of Public Health” a core course in the MPH Program. Cawley founded the GWU PA/MPH Program which has proven to be a popular offering within the Department of PA Studies and the Milken Institute School of Public Health. This program was described by the US Health Resources and Services Administration as an “innovative and progressive” health professions educational offering. Professor Cawley has been nominated for the 2018 PAEA Lifetime Achievement Award. As teacher, researcher, scholar and critical policy observer of the PA and non-physician health provider movement in US medicine, he has served the University for more than three decades.

Johns Hopkins University where he used his sabbatical leave from GWU to complete and publish several book chapters on the history of the emergence of the PA profession in US medicine. In 1988, he was appointed as a fellow in the Epidemiology Program Office of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention where he developed skills and knowledge in infectious disease outbreak investigation. During 2016 John served as a Fulbright Specialist in Economics to Ireland. John is also a two-time recipient of the Kappa Omicron Nu / Human Ecology Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Advising of students. Don was well known by neighbors and passersby for taking his German shepherds, Moose and Vince, on a daily walk. He was a dedicated caretaker of his daughter’s horse, Hope, and a lending hand to neighbors. His favorite hobby was taking care of his yard, especially cutting the grass, which his family swears he “shaped it up” two to three times a week. We will miss seeing him on his big John Deere tractor and planting the garden with his wife.
